An inverter changes solar-panel direct current into alternating current. It can also coordinate with the grid, but it is not an energy-storage battery and does not automatically guarantee power during an outage.

What you will learn

  • Distinguish direct and alternating current.
  • Explain switching and filtering functionally.
  • Understand why backup power needs a suitable design.

Before you start

Read the linked prerequisite first. This article explains principles and does not require assembling or opening equipment.

Why is a panel alone not an AC supply?

Panels generate direct current while the grid uses alternating current. With AC, voltage changes sign and current changes direction over time. The inverter connects those forms through conversion.

Separate generation from conversion: the panel generates electricity; the inverter processes its input into an AC output.

Straight paths represent DC input and the wave represents AC output.

What do switching and filtering do?

At the basic level, rapid switching changes how the DC input is connected. Filters and additional electronics can produce a smooth repeating voltage waveform suited to the intended output.

This explains functions rather than providing a mains assembly diagram. Semiconductor switches control current in response to signals; a modern inverter need not use a rotating motor.

What happens when the grid goes out?

Many grid-connected inverters stop feeding the grid during an outage. Solar-plus-storage systems with suitable advanced inverters can operate independently if designed to do so.

Rooftop panels alone therefore do not establish outage capability. Conversion, storage and independent operation must be understood as coordinated design functions.

A worked example

Follow one stretch of electricity in a hypothetical rooftop design. Sunlight reaches the panel, and the panel delivers direct current. The inverter takes that current, keeps changing how the input is connected so the output voltage changes sign, and filters the result into a smooth alternating voltage. A household load on the AC side runs from that output.

Now remove the grid from the drawing. If the design has no storage and is not described as able to operate independently, the drawing gives no reason to expect the house to have power during an outage, even though the panel is still in sunlight. Add a battery as a separate storage function and an inverter designed for independent operation, and the picture changes; do not relabel the inverter as a battery. For any design, ask whether it states that it can operate without the grid.

Frequently asked questions

Does an inverter generate energy from nothing?

No. Its role here is converting input electricity.

Do solar panels guarantee backup power?

No. The system must support operation during an outage.

Summary

  • Panels generate DC.
  • Inverters convert the input to AC.
  • Backup capability depends on system design.
